Soccer Academy PDF Print E-mail

Soccer or football has traditionally been one of Springwood High Schools most popular sports. The Lower and Mid Mountains have a large community of young people with excellent soccer skills and great commitment to the game. This resource base, plus the excellent sporting grounds at the school provided the inspiration to create the State's first comprehensive high school Soccer Academy.

The Academy will run as a gifted and talented program within the PDHPE Key Learning Area. It will offer an opportunity for talented players to develop their skills and reach their full potential. The Springwood High School Academy is a continuous development program starting in year 7 and continuing through to years 9 and 10.

The Academy will provide a high level of coaching to participants. Director of Coaching, Paul Brown is a level 3 Soccer Coach and Football Federation Australia Senior Instructor. He currently coaches the NSW U15’s and is a current National Coach with many years of elite coaching behind him.

The skill development program at the Academy will supplement and advance the technical skill and knowledge that students receive outside school. One big advantage of a school based academy is that, unlike most club programs, the Academy’s focus is directed toward development and not winning. Student welfare will be a priority and small sided games and technique training will be a priority and enjoyment of football a strong emphasis.

The first objective of the Academy was to select 20 promising players from years 7 and 8 according to the current play-ability and potential. The Academy will be available to a maximum 10 new students each year from the year 7 intake. Students from other years may join if the opportunity arises. These players will be developed for future District, State and possibly international representation.

The Springwood High School Academy has the support of the PDHPE and Sport faculties at school. These faculties will work with Mr Brown to offer students a variety of developmental opportunities. The program has also been endorsed by Football NSW as an excellent means of linking school and community sport. Players will be able to follow sporting pathways that may lead to the NSW Institute or State League programs.
